Jeff Newman Courses Revisited

Post by Alan Ford »

Okay guys and gals, here's the deal, there are countless 1 hour Jeff Newman instruction videos uploaded to YouTube for free viewing or downloading. So what we need to make these videos meaningful is the tabulature that came with them.

I am asking anyone who owns any course material to please make a pdf copy of the written course material and make it available to the community. I know people have reached out to the Newman family and have not had any replies. I am sure that Jeff would not have wanted his life's work to fall into the abyss.

Note to moderators: Is there any problem with people posting this material? If not, I would like to be the first to contribute with the material for the two hour course entitled Pedal Steel Guitar Techniques. I looked it over and there is no copyright on the document.

Maybe a post could be set up as a repository for the pdf files along with an acknowledgement and tribute to Jeff Newman for his wonderful contribution to countless PSG players. I owe it to him for my early learning many decades ago.

For anyone interested, there is a website offering free download of a program called free YTD Video Downloader. You can download the videos as mp4 and you can also convert them and any music on YouTube to mp3 so you can listen to it in any number of ways. If you pay for the app there are different levels of download speed and conversion choices.

I don’t have the tabs I wanted to say thanks for uploading this course. I am pretty new and this course has been helping me more than any of the other resources I have tried. I was doing the Paul Franklin method, and he is a great player with really excellent licks to learn. But IMO it isn’t structured as well for the beginner as this Newman course is. He really does a great job of starting basic and building up, and he really drills the licks into you. I know different people respond to different teaching styles but this one really works for me.

Hi Alan,
I am working through the courses on YouTube, and I don’t have tabs for any of them. That being said, I haven’t found it necessary to have the tabs so far since Newman does a very good job of showing what he is doing. I only mentioned the tabs because that’s what was requested in the first post.

The tab comes in handy when you are practicing the lessons, rather than finding and then rewatching the lesson. I have now accumulated every Jeff Newman video with tab and all the backing tracks. Having the tab helps.

Bill McCloskey,

Are you willing to share the tabs that you have?

I paid a lot of money for the tabs I have, so no. But there are people on the forum who will sell them to you.

That really would be helpful. I too am realizing the same thing with the Paul Franklin course.

I totally understand the idea behind wanting to share this info publicly, but we have to realize that this is still copyrighted material, so I would suggest it is not a good idea to freely and openly share it via the forum. I suspect lots IS shared here, but usually with a post asking if anyone has the tab "available" for a particular lesson, and is contacted by someone offering the tab via PDF or whatever.

I know some of the videos on Youtube by the Polish Blues Brothers (IYKYK) have the tab in a video going page by page - just go to their home page on YT, then click to see playlists, then open the playlists to see if the tab is the last video. Look around - perhaps what you are looking for is already there!

Hey gents, could not agree with you more. I have worked with the Paul Franklin method for three years now. It is fantastic, but nothing beats the rubber hit in the road like Jeff Newman‘s approach. I’ liken it to my friends as the difference between going to college for comp lit or going to a technology school to learn Car Repair.
Anyway, cant tell you how much I love both of those guys. I am like halfway working my way through Jeff’s materials and I agree with what all you say but there’s a small problem, I would love to buy these materials, but they are not available any longer. Their website is closed down. And I spent hours trying to get a hold of his wife to see if there’s a way to purchase the remaining materials.
Pedal steel guitar is an idiosyncratic and small world. I’m sure that Jeff would want his passion, talent and work to be available to the community of musicians. Is it unethical to propose that we just make the materials for people to use and at a point when the family has reestablished their Website/store we all do the right thing and buy the materials that we have used? It would just be sad to see it all disappear. Thoughts?

I cannot imagine that anyone who has spent the time and effort to learn his materials would not be absolutely smitten by his beautiful spirit, his passion and his incredible talent. And not want to compensate him if it was possible.

There just are no words to describe the loss of Jeff Newman as a man, a steel player or an instructor of steel guitar material and technique. He surely has tutored thousands if not greater.

Point of correction though, Jeff's wife Fran passed away not many years after Jeff. It's his daughter that was servicing his material for a few years but has since gone silent and stopped doing it as far as anybody knows, but the material is still the property of the Newman heirs as I understand it and I don't envision it ever being available again.
