Big Jim Murphey with Carl Smith

Post by Duane Becker »

Carl Smith' swinging band with Murph! Incredible! Listen to the lead at 1:50. I wish we could hear more of this type of playing on modern hot country.

I listened to several cuts on the album. Great steel.
Afraid of Losing You Again, Is the only E9th sounding cut I found on the album.
Even, "I Know Your Married, But I Love You Still", Sounds to 6th for my old ears.

That album made me trade my single 10 in for D-10. Big Jim tears up that C neck….+ plays the sh*t out of tenor sax.

He’s probably the most overlooked steel master of all time.

For a long time, I thought Chalker was the steel player. Jim played a lot of Chalker style. My favorite was "Good Deal Lucille." Correction, it was Chalker on this song.

Near the end of Chalker's career, he and Jim Murphy played a whole night side by side in one of the downtown Nashville clubs. I don't believe anyone recorded that.

That's actually Curly Chalker on the record. Murphy did work the road with Carl and did some later recordings as well.
