Question for Sho-Bud Maverick II owners (strings)

Post by Pat Dixon »

I knew when I ordered my first PSG that I'd go down a plethora of rabbit holes, but didn't think buying strings would be one of them. On the Sho-Bud website it has the copedent table in one of the pictures so not being one to leave anything to chance I wanted to proactively buy a set or two of strings before mine arrives.

I found a lot of string sets & can come close, but none of them match.

I know that I can experiment/alter gauges but my experience with tremolo guitars is that if you change anything you change everything due to physics. At my age I simply don't want to do that (learning to use finger picks, blocking, etc is enough).

Can someone please tell me what strings you use & the source? I've been here (Forum Store), Sweetwater, Amazon, the usual places but can't find a set that has what I need, specifically a wound .022 6th. I know I could just ask Dawn but am trying not to bother them too much, I'd rather they spend their time building my guitar!

Thanks for any help.

I understand your not wanting to disturb the good folks at Sho~Bud, but that's probably in your best interest. They will probably toss in a couple sets for you with your guitar if you ask.

It's always best to follow manufacturers specs at least for some time until and if you decide to customize your sets. Remember, they chose a set of strings for a reason.

Otherwise, the steel guitar shopper store here can supply strings but offhand, I don't see a set that contains a 22W.

The Steel Guitar Shopper has Bobby Lee's E9Th Stage One GHS E9 String set with a wound 6Th G# .022. The JagwireStrings.com has a Lloyd Green set with E9, sixth string , .022W.
Hope this may help. I also had trouble finding a E9 set with a .022W string in the set.

Wound .022 is not a great choice if there is a whole step drop in the copedant, which is why they are rarely included in sets. No shame in using a solid string there, in fact many of us strongly prefer it over a wound .022. If you are determined to use a wound string there just buy individual strings of the preferred gauges rather than full sets.

I saw the Bobby Lee's; didn't know about the other site. Neither are exact but maybe close enough, thanks.

So I guess there aren't any Maverick II owners here...

I recently have worked w/SIT to make a custom set for '70's Sho~Bud guitars with the 1/1 changer. This set should work to better balance the pulls on your B pedal.

Like Dave said, this will only allow a 1/2 step lower on string 6.

Mike's SIT set is really close to what I use on my Sho~Bud guitars. I buy D'Addario bulk singles and have changed to .013 for first string and .015 on fourth. Never liked unwound 6th strings, but I never lowered it either.

Pat, I know one player who plays a Maverick II-her name is Andrea Whitt. I'm not sure what strings the new Sho-Buds are equipped with, but I'm sure they're great strings
