My Resobird......My Way

Post by HowardR »

Well, I bit the Resobird bullet.......I was impressed with build quality and sound quality that I saw in videos & photos.....so I thought that I would take the chance. and it paid off in spades.......now, I usually don't "buy off the rack" as I always want something different and I always have to change things up, down, & sideways.......so this is what I did:

I'm pissed off at chrome nowadays and so I altered the hardware......I did a vintage hot patina finish of the coverplate and sound screens......I had Jimmie install MGB vintage brass tuners, I put a bronze patina stain on the changer, endplates, and pedal bar.......I had the top & bottom edges rounded.......I had Jimmie finish the front & back aprons with colors that I chose to complement the top & the neck......I made my own Resobird logo along with different lettering.......this is a 3&4 btw......

Jimmie was extremely accommodating for all aspects of the build and was also very patient with me, since dealing with me is certainly an adventure......and not always for the weak hearted

The build took about 6 weeks which is pretty darn good in this day & age......I enjoyed working with Jimmie as he's a good problem solver and knows his product......

The acoustic part of this "Bird" is substantial......unplugged you're not going to play in a bluegrass banjo environment but playing with other instruments you will certainly hold your own.......BTW, do you know what the best pickup is for a banjo?.......an F150.........

Plugged in it is powerful while retaining the dobro sound.......I also have a Fishman Feather pick-up installed which sounds more tinny & old timey but I have not yet tweaked amp settings or played through an Aura pedal yet (just got it a few days ago).......so all & all I'm extremely happy with everything about this guitar.......and anybody who wants a niche' instrument like this, I would say that you would be very happy with it.......

Also, when I went to pick it up, Jeff Surrat from Show-Pro was there working with Jimmie on their Early Bird pedal steels.......I've included all of us in the bottom photos.....

People remember Howard's amazing collaborations with Carroll Benoit. Really fun to see it continuing with Jimmy Hudson.

So you bit the bullet !! Must have been a very tough decision !! GAS can really hurt sometimes and I definitely feel your pain.... (tongue firmly in cheek here).

Great looking Reso and I like your choices with the brass giving it that old style vibe.

This Resobird gets my vote for the most beautiful new steel guitar so far this year. Totally unique from so many different angles. We could give credit equally to Jimmie Hudson who built it or to Howard who conceived the musical and visual design.
