Made a Sitar Bar today

Post by Kendell Scott »

Went to town with a belt sander on this cheap Ernie Ball bar I had laying around covered in dings and made a sitar bar out of it. Started slow with about a 1/4” flat spot and it was a little too subtle so I hit it again and made the flat spot closer to 1/2”. Way less subtle now, but still maybe not quite as prominent as Moon on Louisiana Woman from Waylon Live. The bar I used is pretty light, just thought I’d ask the hive mind if a heavier bar would be better for the task.

I have a 1 inch Cobra sitar bar that I love. I recently polished it up and it sounds awesome. The milling on it is around 1/4 in I believe but it sounds wonderful. I believe the heavier bar will do the trick. I’m not a fan of the heavy bars but the Cobra sounds wonderful,, it has that Mooney sound!
